Hot Startups - HitBliss

Startup Of The Day - PickyDomains.com

http://www.hitbliss.com/

With only a few legal options for accessing TV programs and movies over the internet--pay upfront (Netflix, Amazon, iTunes) or sit through advertisements (Hulu)--it was inevitable that an alternative model would emerge.

HitBliss, an online streaming site developed by husband-and-wife team Sharon Peyer and Andrew Prihodko, offers popular shows like NBC's Battlestar Galactica and hit movies from the likes of Paramount Pictures, Focus Features and Universal Pictures. Users can purchase titles from the HitBliss Store for roughly $4 per movie or $2 per TV show. But the revolution starts with the HitBliss Earn service.

Viewers in Earn peruse the same titles but sit through advertisements to bank money--about 25 cents per ad viewed--that can later be used in the HitBliss Store. To earn payouts up to twice as quickly, Earn users build a profile, adding their location, gender, age, income and browser search history. With that information, HitBliss can match a viewer to an advertiser's target demographic and ensure that the ad gets seen. How? Prompts appear in ads that require the viewer to click on it. The faster and more consistently a viewer clicks, the fewer prompts they see, and the faster they earn credits.

Put simply: Brands such as Aflac and Dr Pepper are paying people to watch and listen to their messages on HitBliss. To ease the marketing assault, HitBliss does allow viewers to skip or remove all messages from a particular brand--but they pay a penalty by sitting through more ads from other sponsors.

"Instead of relying on the old model where the advertisers pay the content owner, we let the advertisers basically reward the users for their time and attention," Peyer says. "And viewers are rewarded with the ability to actually get what they want."

Peyer and Prihodko came up with the idea while working on their previous venture, Pixamo, a photo-sharing company that had a free, ad-supported component. They recognized that the ads were being mostly ignored and concluded that targeted advertising would be more effective, and possibly more enjoyable, if users were able to control the experience. "That's when we realized we wanted to create a model that just involves the consumer and the advertiser," Peyer says.

After selling Pixamo in 2007, the two focused their efforts on developing Lexington, Mass.-based HitBliss, which launched in private beta earlier this year. While the company's film and TV library isn't yet as robust as those of its more established competitors, it does stream movies four months after they leave theaters, up to a year earlier than Netflix--which had revenue last year of a whopping $3.6 billion. And when the service exits beta later this year, Peyer and Prihodko expect to be able to offer it on smartphones and internet-enabled TVs.

Time will tell if HitBliss becomes the new answer for ad-supported streaming media. If successful, its model could apply to the likes of Pandora, gaming and other online entertainment, reshaping the public's idea of "free" media.

How BikeCaffe's Mike Ash Sells Lattes From A Bike

Site of the day - PickyDomains.com, world's first risk free naming service

http://bikecaffe.com

Mike Ash, who had worked in restaurants since he was 15 and earned a degree in hospitality management, hoped to one day open his own eatery. But as the years went on and he managed various restaurants and cafeterias, Ash, now 35, figured he was unlikely to ever save enough money to open his own place.

Then, flipping through a Costco circular in 2010, he saw an ad for the BikeCaffe, a British franchise concept that had recently come to the U.S. The idea was as simple as the name--a mobile coffee shop mounted on a four-wheel cycle, complete with Astoria espresso machine, blender, pastry bin, refrigerator and sink.

Ash signed on as one of the first U.S. franchisees and began fueling up downtown St. Petersburg, Fla. Today you can find him on the corner of Fourth Street and Central Avenue--or sometimes, especially if it's extra hot or rainy, inside the BB&T bank building. On weekends Ash sets up his mobile java machine at festivals and events.

Eventually, Ash hopes to step back from the grinder. "I would love to own multiple carts and spend my time marketing them," he says. "But until then, I still enjoy it. It's a pretty awesome job."

He filled us in on what it's like to be the go-to guy for to-go coffee in downtown St. Pete.

Coffee from a bike?

That can't be very good. The coffee is really, really good! It's all fair-trade organic tea and coffee, and I think we're the only place in downtown St. Pete that carries that. The biggest comment I get is, "You can't make all that stuff on your bike, can you?" Our menu is the same size as Starbucks'; we can make macchiatos, lattes, chai--everything. We also make smoothies.

All the drinks are made to order. It's a little slower than pouring drip coffee, but the quality is 10 times better.

How do you like making your own schedule?

It's kind of weird to start a business thinking you can work your own hours. But you end up working the same number of hours as before, usually more. At the same time, it's kind of cool that it's yours, and what you put into it, you get out of it. I'm always working. I get here at 6:20 a.m. to set up and leave around 4:30 p.m. I also work weekends, so at least 50 hours a week. In 16 months, I've missed only three days.

What's your biggest seller?

Lattes are always popular. People also like my seasonal drinks. I have a chalkboard and carry three or four specials per day. I usually create them myself, things like eggnog lattes, mocha peppermint hot chocolate or caramel toffee nut lattes. We have a lot of freedom to experiment.

Do you get a good workout riding the bike?

Well, the thing weighs about 400 pounds. I don't think I've ever ridden it more than half a mile at a time. It's geared super low, so if there are no hills or rough terrain, it's easy. You wouldn't win any races on it. Florida is pretty flat, so I'm lucky with that.

What's the biggest misconception about your BikeCaffe?

People assume I sell hot dogs. Every day someone comes up asking for one.

Hot Tips - The Best Free Business Tool You (Probably) Don't Know About.

http://www.fohrcard.com/

Nowadays, if a brand is solely focused on traditional marketing, i.e., television, radio, billboard and print advertising, chances are it’s not tapping its full potential. Online marketing, with the growing popularity of blogs and other social media platforms, has become critical for brand advertising as well.

Fohr Card, an analytics platform created by James Nord, a blogger and photographer, alongside Rich Tong, Tumblr’s former fashion director, and Holly Stair, a social media manager, aims to bring brands and bloggers together to form a partnership that can include advertising, sponsored content and gift giving.

With Fohr Card, bloggers are given the chance to be found by brands, where they can showcase their social media following across different social media platforms (Tumblr, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc.), including their real-time traffic stats. When joining Fohr Card, bloggers agree to divulge their private Google Analytics figures to eliminate numbers-fudging.

While Chris Black, a social media marketing consultant whose clientele includes Gilt Groupe and New Balance, firmly believes that big numbers don’t necessarily equal engaged users, the Fohr Card team assures brands that not every blogger is invited to join the platform. Alongside popularity, every blogger’s Fohr Card is reviewed to guarantee quality and original content.

For brands to gain access to Fohr Card’s roster of more than 1,800 fashion and beauty bloggers, an annual membership fee of $5,000 (more for large companies and agencies) is required. They then gain access to the bloggers’ numbers. Fohr Card also allows them to sort through the numbers by region, category (DIY, menswear, nail art, etc.), and traffic on certain platforms. Puma and Oscar dela Renta are just two of Fohr Card’s brand launch partners.

Mr. Nord also divulges that they plan to eventually recruit travel, food, mommy bloggers and others to turn Fohr Card into a global marketing tool.

Site of the day - PickyDomains.com, world's first risk free naming agency

http://www.bigcommerce.com/

All venture capitalists have got startup business plans piling on their desks every single day. But how many of them are the breakthrough ideas worth investing in? Australian BigCommerce has proven right to the Massachusetts based venture capital firm General Catalyst. “We quickly signed up our first 1000 customers within three months,” says Eddie Machaalani, the co-funder and co-CEO of BigCommerce, “and now we’re about to hit 20,000 customers after just 17 months.

Mitchell Harper, the other co-founder and co-CEO, explains “you can set up your own online store in a few clicks. We’re growing so quickly because we’ve made it really easy to sell online.”

If you’ve got a product and you need an easy way to sell it and advertise it, BigCommerce might be exactly what you’re looking for. All the marketing tools have been built in and the list of features is countless which targets all potential kinds of client s.

There are e-commerce newbie’s looking for tools to start with: web-based control panel, automated email marketing and almost one hundred store designs. (General Catalyst have also believed in BigFish, airbnb, iWalk and many others). This is how Eddie Machaalani speaks of the beginnings of their cooperation. “When we made the decision to raise capital and did our U.S tour to pitc h different VC firms, General Catalyst had already done a ton of due diligence on the market opportunity, our company and our competitors. They were very eager to invest in the company.”

BigCommerce have recently announced $2M integration fund to follow the market developments and create new better features. The software has now got built-in Pinterest and Quickbooks integration, referral system, a live chat, abandoned cart plugin and many other improvements. They tent to release new features every two weeks.

The software seems to be ahead of its competition (Shopify, Zencart, Magento) according to various online discussions, blogs and comparisons and is only getting better and smarter. E-shopping cart is gaining the whole new meaning. And what does it mean to you? Only one way to find out. (Here is a link for $100 coupon or 30 day free trial provided by BigCommerce for our readers).

The Business Of Hats.

Hot Tips - The Best Free Business Tool You (Probably) Don't Know About.

http://www.facebook.com/hatsofstyle

After Tom Romiski came up empty in his local search for the perfect cap, he opened Hats of Style in Thousand Oaks, where there’s a perfect “cap” for everyone.

“The (local) department stores didn’t carry anything close to what I was looking for,” Romiski said. “I couldn’t find fedoras, I couldn’t find derby hats, I couldn’t find pork-pie hats. . . . The only option was to go to Hollywood and spend a fortune.”

Since his business opened on Thousand Oaks Boulevard in November, the 35-year-old entrepreneur has earned a reputation for stocking his shelves with hard-to-find selections, including cowboy hats, ivy caps, bowlers and top hats.

“I opened the store as a means of getting customers the kind of hats you can’t find around here,” Romiski said. “Our prices vary (but) you can find a great hat for under $25.”

The Newbury Park resident lives by the motto that there is a hat for everyone—even if they don’t know it yet.

“In a few days, anyone can become a hat person,” he said.

Romiski, a Simi Valley native, said his love affair with head wear comes from personal experience.

“When I first put on a fedora, I thought I looked like Freddy Krueger,” he said, referencing the 1980s-era horror villain.

But his peers disagreed.

“All of a sudden I started getting compliments,” Romiski said. “I kept wearing it and it became a part of me.”

Hats are making a comeback, he said.

“Young people and older people are now wearing the same styles. An older man may come in looking for a pork-pie hat, but someone in high school might look at the same hat and say, ‘Wow, that’s really cool. I want that.’”

The Cal State Northridge graduate is no stranger to sales.

He sold doughnuts at age 12, and when he was 13 he worked as a door-to-door salesman.

“First, it was newspapers. Then it was candy.”

But schoolyard sales proved to be an even more lucrative business.

“I sold firecrackers and gum,” he said with a laugh. “I have a lot of experience in sales.”

More than 20 years later, Romiski provides customers with a different type of pop.

“A hat is the last thing you put on and the first thing people notice about you,” he said. “We help them choose hats that complement their clothing style.”

Newbury Park resident Chris Miller called the store a happy place.

“When you’re down and out, going to the hat store just lifts you up,” she said. “You feel much better. . . .

“Tom’s good at putting things together,” Miller added. “I love going in.”

Romiski is proud of the selection his store offers.

“When the store first opened, a girl came in looking for an orange fedora,” Romiski said. “She had lost hers in Malibu the year before and had been searching for a new one.”

The young lady was in luck.

“When I had one, she was really jazzed,” Romiski said. “It made my day.”

Eager to satisfy every customer, the store owner will go out of his way to make sure they find the right fit.

“Some people want their hats customized,” he said. “We accessorize the hats and offer embroidery for decoration. I’ll take a feather and attach it with some glue to give it a different look.”

Hats can also be made to fit.

“We can stretch them or add padding,” Romiski said. “The customer can get hats custom-made to their exact comfort level.”

Making people comfortable is part of the job.

“A lot of (chemo) patients come here,” Romiski said. “They’re very sensitive to what kind of hat they want, and we try and find a hat that fits them well. . . .

“We give those customers special attention. It’s a very sensitive topic, and we try to make them feel (at ease). It’s rewarding to watch them feel satisfied with their hats.”

Whether they’re for fashion or function, hats can be a fun addition to any wardrobe, Romiski said.

“Tommy has hats that can’t be beat,” Miller said. “Everyone should have a hat.”

TrunkClub Review

BizHacks - free social intranet for small businesses

http://www.trunkclub.com/

Unlike women, most men don’t see shopping as a social activity. As a matter of fact, for various reasons ranging from lack of time, no idea what type of clothing look good on them, lack of confidence in their capacity to wear styles that look good on them, issues with body image that stem from being overweight or underweight, a lot of men hate shopping.

Brian Spaly, co-founder of venture-backed clothing company Bonobos, has taken on the reins of what used to be an ailing Trunk Club as CEO. Trunk Club, founded in 2009 with a business model that ended up in quality control and customer service nightmare, has since flourished under Spaly’s leadership. Trunk Club’s target clientele are, well, men, especially executives who value time over money. Trunk Club doesn’t charge for a fitting and consultation. Just like Barney’s or Saks Fifth Avenue, the company makes money by buying in bulk and selling at retail. But what makes Trunk Club’s existing business model stand out is the customer service layer that gives them an unfair advantage over their peers.

So generally, once a client steps into a Trunk Club office (that is, if he’s got the time to do so), he is greeted by a sales person who also happens to be a professional stylist. The stylist then asks questions regarding his lifestyle, work, what he does with his time, what he wears, how he wants to look, etc. The fitting process is an opportunity for the stylist to further profile his customer and know his exact measurements. Depending on the client’s needs, the stylist can work with him on a recurring basis.

Now, if a customer can’t be bothered to step into a Trunk Club store, the company sends a box of items for him to try on and play with. If none fits or he doesn’t like any of the items, he simply puts everything back into the box and returns it at no charge. The stuff he feels like keeping, he keeps, a nd once the box finds its way back to the Trunk Club headquarters, his credit card automatically gets billed.

If the stylist’s service is free and a client gets custom-selected items delivered at his door anytime he feels like it without being charged a cent more for any item he chooses to buy, why would he shop anywhere else? Exactly the words Brian Spaly would tell his staff every morning.

Wendy Krepak and her husband made a comfortable living in real estate for 26 years. While both of them were making healthy salaries, Wendy always liked using gift cards, point cards and rewards cards, but she was beginning to find that keeping them organized was easier said than done. That's when Wendy came up with a little invention of her own to help her organize those cards.

By inserting an alphabetical filing system in to a small purse, she was simply trying to organize things for herself. But soon others began to notice her using her little invention and asking where she got it. She quickly realized she might have stumbled onto something. So Wendy put a plan together and began producing and selling what she called the "Card Cubby." And it was a good thing she did, because soon thereafter -- and without severance or much notice -- both she and her husband were laid off from their real estate jobs.

Suddenly, in hot water, Wendy decided to invest even more in her idea and she and her husband raided their 401Ks in order to build the business. It was a risky gamble, but within the first 18 months, they had done $1.5 million in sales. Wendy's courage and belief paid off, and today the Card Cubby is a multi-million-dollar business.

Betsy Johnson, 27, started working for Boeing as an intern in 2006 while attending the University of Puget Sound in Washington. After graduating in 2007, she was selected to enter the company's BCFP (Business Career Foundation Program) in Philadelphia. Four years later, she decided it was time to leave her day job. Although her job offered her a steady paycheck, the opportunity to travel abroad, mentorship, and even a pension, she realized that working hard to climb the corporate ladder was getting her nowhere.

She ended up at Disney in a new position right after quitting Boeing, but she grew frustrated with legacy processes and systems. She lasted at Disney for two months before deciding that it was time to start her own company, SwimZip.

SwimZip sells UV 50 swimwear for babies, toddlers, and children. The idea came to Johnson after she was diagnosed with skin cancer. SwimZip is currently in its business development stage but is forecasting a profit for this year.

The Business Of Design - The Macbeth Collection Story

Daily Advice Link - Free Logo Service

http://themacbethcollection.com/

Company: The Macbeth Collection
Location: Dayton, N.J.
Annual sales: $26 million

Dress designer Margaret Josephs decided to be a full-time mom soon after having her son in 1996. "I couldn't take being away from him," she said. At the time, Josephs was also looking after her three stepchildren.

"My home was cluttered all the time. I decided I needed a storage solution," she said. And while she was at it, she decided to start a decorative storage products business.

In 1998, Josephs pursued her first idea -- decorative metal buckets. She went to Home Depot, bought a few plain metal buckets and painted them. She supplied 20 to a local store. "They sold out in two days," she said. "I thought I was on to something."

Josephs expanded from buckets to painted and decoupage trays, and other home accessories. A year later, orders were coming in so quickly that Josephs recruited her nanny and others in the neighborhood to make the products.

In 2000, she got her first big order, $40,000, and the business "exploded," she said. Two years later, "The Macbeth Collection" -- a name she picked because it sounded regal -- crossed $1 million in sales.

Her business today generates about $30 million from licensing agreements and direct sales. Her products are sold in major retail stores such as Barnes & Noble, Bed, Bath & Beyond, and soon in Target.

While she's enjoying her success, Josephs admits it's been hard to juggle being a mom and an entrepreneur. She's made it work because "women are amazing multitaskers," she said.

Her now 16-year-old son is "so proud," she said. "He calls me the 'Rock & Roll Martha Stewart.'

Millionaire Mompreneurs - Amy Norman/Stella Ma

Tip Of The Day - Accept Credit Cards Anywhere With Your iPhone, iPad Or Android Device.

http://www.littlepassports.com/

As colleagues at eBay in the early 2000s, Amy Norman and Stella Ma shared an entrepreneurial "itch" and knew they wanted to collaborate on a business at some point. When the two were starting families, they honed in on an idea for finding a fun and inspiring way to teach kids about other countries.

"I moved a lot internationally as a child," said Norman. "Stella grew up in Oakland but she shared my passion for instilling a global perspective in kids."

With funding from family and angel investors, including LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner, Little Passports was born. The online subscription service send kids ages 5 to 10 a monthly package designed to look like it's coming from a different country. Kids get stickers, a world map, souvenirs, and letters from characters Sam and Sofia describing their travel adventures.

Little Passport became Norman's saving grace when it launched in 2006. "I was eight months pregnant with my second child and my marriage fell apart," she said. "I had to move out of the apartment, I was trying to launch my business and I had no salary. Around the same time, her father was also diagnosed with cancer and died four months later.

But her passion to get Little Passport off the ground kept her going.

Norman, 38, and Ma, 40, launched in 2009, and sales crossed $1 million this year. Norman said overcoming such steep odds has made her a more confident woman and role model to her kids.

"This is a story about overcoming," she said. "We surrounded ourselves with people who supported us, we believed in ourselves. It's the most fun we've ever had and we're better businesswomen and moms because of it."

Buying baby name books is so 1990s. Founded by a busy dad, PickyDomains was intended as a risk-free naming service for businesses and domains, that is until media wrote about wacky Canadian couple who crowdsourced their baby name to the company (baby boy was named Color Sword Raven). Another reason for PickyDomain's popularity among parents is that working as a namer usually takes only 10-15 minutes a day, where as other freelancing gigs typical for the stay at home moms and dads, like writing, telemarketing or being a virtual assistant, can take a few hours out of each day.

EggDrop Review

Daily Advice Link - Free Logo Service

http://www.eggdropapp.com/

Ever since Craigslist came to existence, the newspaper's classified ads section has all but became extinct. Enter EggDrop, a new mobile app, that simplifies the marketplace process even further and allows you to take it with you.

Before EggDrop became the EggDrop it is now, it was more like eBay than Craigslist, but with a twist. Instead of people submitting their maximum bids over a specified period of time, EggDrop required sellers to designate a maximum and minimum price. Within 72 hours, the price of an item fell until someone bid on it.

But this didn't seem to work, so Dan Zheng, the app creator, and his team decided to release a revamped version of the product. Now, sellers take a picture of their merchandise, upload it to the website and decide on a price. And unlike Craigslist where you have to repost every now and then to ensure that people see your ad, EggDrop automatically does the reposting for you after a week until yo u instruct it to stop.

At EggDrop, buyers and sellers figure out a way to make payments between themselves. Sellers cannot ship items from EggDrop to make the process stay local. Further, users give each other badges and karma scores, meaning, if you don't screw people over, you get more props. EggDrop's marketplace is, in every respect, local, encouraging face-to-face interactions, and if you're a total jerk, expect to get called out.

Recently, EggDrop incorporated an anonymous messaging system to allow buyers and sellers to communicate without giving out personal information and phone numbers. There's also a wanted section where buyers get to post what exactly they're looking for and get paired with sellers who have what they are looking for, making finding what you need a lot simpler.

With about half a million downloads in 50 states and some part of the United Kingdom, there's a chance EggDrop will give Craigslist a run for its money.

YBuy.Com Tries Shareware Model With Hardware Goods.

Daily giveaway - Free $50 bonus for your next PPC campaign

https://www.ybuy.com/

YBUY is a try-before-you-buy online subscription service that charges users $24.95 to give them a chance to test drive the latest in electronics, home and kitchen gadgets for 30 days before they commit to purchase.

“For most consumers, when it comes to electronics or products for the home, the idea is that they want to test the product out first,” said YBUY CEO Stephen Svajian. “Typically, you’ll wait in line for hours. Then, when you finally get into the store, there’s someone right behind you breathing down your neck, pressuring you, and maybe even dripping sweat on you. And at the end of the day, you may only get five or ten minutes with a device that hundreds of other people have had their mitts on. I don’t know about you, but I’ve never seen someone wipe down an iPad after they use it. This can make for a pretty gross and stressful shopping experience.”

With YBUY, Svajian said, there’s no reason for brick and mortar showrooms to exist. “We can actually bring the showroom straight to your living room,” he said. “Our unique alternative, that comes to you brand new or completely sanitized, allows consumers to test it out for 30 days in the comfort of your own home. This can really help you get to know the item you would like to invest in, before fully committing to make the purchase. There’s no other experience like it out there on the market.”

YBUY, who’s site appears to be overloaded at moment because of this announcement, will be offering the new iPad on their site for $24.95 for a one month test drive.

Sounds like how you sell puppies. “Why don’t you take it home overnight and see if your family likes him. If not, bring him back tomorrow.”

Doba Review

Daily advice link - Freelancer? We are hiring!

Have you ever thought about setting up your own online store but got put off by the necessary paperwork, a need of big financial investment and too much potential risk? Well, have you ever heard of drop-shipping? Exactly. It’s a way of moving goods from the manufacturer directly to the retailer without going through the usual distribution channels. There are many companies on the market offering drop-shipping softwares and solutions; one of them is Doba from the United States, the industry leader.

Jeremy Hanks, the Co-Founder and Chairman of Doba, explains how it works. “We’ve provided a web platform so that small-business retailers that are selling predominantly through e-commerce can come online and access an inventory and fulfillment system. We help retailers find products to sell and help wholesale providers find retailers to distribute their products.”

According to Doba, all you need to do is find the products you want to sell, list products for sale across the web and fulfill orders without having to store, pack or ship anything. They guarantee the lowest drop-ship price. And they also provide a Money Back Guarantee in case you’re unable to recoup on your initial purchase in product sales by the end of your membership.

At the moment, you can choose three different subscriptions depending on various options like supplier access (core or pro), size of your inventory (between 1K and 25K), Pre-Pay possibility (on or off) and Elite Seller Report feature (on or off). There is Doba ($59.95 per month or $599.50 per year), Doba Advanced ($69.95 per month or $699.50 per year) and Doba Pro ($89.95 per month or $899.50 per year.

Once signed in, you’re going to have access to more than one and a half million products consolidated into one catalogue which you can search through by category, brand, price etc. You’re going to create your own Inventory List which you can customize and edit according to your needs. You’re going to be able to Push to Facebook and eBay. You’re going to have access to training materials, special deals and many other available features. It’s too good not to try it.

And you can try it any time and for free! The company is now offering a 7-day trial (here is a coupon for 14-day free trial). You provide your email address (future username) and create a password, fill in your contact and credit card details in case any sales are billed during this period. You can sign in from any country all over the world; however, Doba only operates within the United States. This means that all your activity, i.e. sales, marketing and client service is going to be focused and operating in the U.S. Taking under consideration that the U.S Retail Industry operates in trillions of Dollars, there’s plenty of market share for everybody.

How One Couple Turned From Teaching To Filling Ink Cartriges (And Made A Million Meanwhile)

Site of the day - PickyDomains.com, world's first risk free naming agency

www.castleink.com

As a high-school English teacher Lauren Elward, 33, blew through hundreds of ink cartridges printing out syllabuses and handouts for her students.

Convinced there had to be a cheaper way to replenish ink, Lauren launched Castle Ink in 2005 out of her Greenlawn, N.Y., home. The company retails repurposed ink cartridges for printers and toners from at least seven different companies, including Lexmark and Epson.

Used ink cartridges are refilled with new ink and thoroughly tested before they are resold. Castle Ink also sells refill kits for customers who prefer to pour fresh ink into their used cartridges themselves.

"We've always been avid recyclers," said Lauren's husband Bill, 35. "Refurbished ink cartridges keep millions of pounds of plastic out of our landfills each year."

With no loans, the Elwards put $5,000 of their own money into the business, to hire a web designer and launch a website. There was, and still is, no storefront. Nor are there any additional employees. During the business' incubation stage, the couple kept their day jobs as a safety net.

n June, they crossed over the $1 million in revenue mark. "It was a big win, psychologically, the idea that you can do that on the side and out of your house," said Bill. "We've spent almost no money on marketing. We've been able to drive 100,000 visits a month just on Google alone."

This, in addition to keeping the business entirely virtual, allows them to offer competitive pricing even as more competitors crop up. "There are definitely companies out there that have a product like ours," said Bill. "Our customer service is one differentiating factor. We have a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee."

The company also pays for return shipping.

Karen Hall, a compliance assistant who orders office supplies on behalf of Home Loan Investment Bank in Warwick, R.I., from Castle Ink, agreed that Castle Ink's customer service is good. "When you ask a question, the turnaround time is 30 or 45 minutes," she said. "And, our delivery time is very quick -- within a day it is usually here."

In 2007, Castle Ink grew profitable enough that Lauren could fulfill her dream: to quit her teaching job. "She went on maternity leave and never went back" to work, said Bill. Eventually, they outsourced customer service, which includes inventory and filling orders. "For a long time my wife was handling all the customer service. That was a killer for her. Through a relationship with our vendor [in South Carolina], we were able to have them handle that," said Bill.

Their biggest challenge, however, even with Lauren devoted to just Castle Ink, is managing their time. Bill still works full-time in web analytics, digital strategy and online marketing at College Board, a not-for-profit designed to connect students with college opportunities. The couple is also raising two young children. Often their energy is zapped. That they cannot immediately act upon brilliant ideas or brainstorming sessions is frustrating.

Another hurdle has been to retain competitive pricing. "A lot of the dealers are importing out of China, and it's poor-quality ink," said Bill. "They're undercutting us by a few dollars."

Castle Ink counteracts that threat by promoting its recycle-friendly mantra, which wins over many customers. One fan is Nev Norona, who began buying ink cartridges from Castle Ink three years ago. "I have always returned my cartridges to them after they are depleted, since I know they will either recycle them or use them for other purposes," said Norona, who lives in Flint, Mich.
Remarkable hiring stories

In early 2010, the company launched an annual college scholarship fund, awarding $2,500 to a student expressing a passion for recycling and environmental conservation. An additional $1,000 was awarded last year as a "paperless scholarship" with an online application process. "We're trying to help students and get them to seek out higher education," said Bill.

Addie Spahr, founder of Green Living Consulting, agreed that Castle Ink's eco-friendly angle is a key to its success. "Building a culture of green is becoming 'smart business', and it seems that the companies making that connection are the ones staying afloat in tough economic times," she said.
